Cum interpreteaza Hr-istii cv-ul tau

Varianta serioasa

If you don't have a CV yet or you have one but you didn't up-date it in the last few years because you didn't think that you will need it well, it's time for you to rethink that. Here are a few tips & tricks about how to build your CV.

First of all don't forget that your CV is you visit card in front of potential employers. Some of them will decide to hire you based on it and their decision will surely influence you life for the years to come. I've met a lot of people that don't want to invest time in building a CV either because they don't know how to, they are lazy or just don't think is that important. Except for the situation when you already know the employer and he knows you also so he doesn't need your CV in any other situations the employer will want to know something about you, where you used to work, what you know, what trainings or courses you took over the time. Best trick in this situation is to try and put yourself in the employer's shoes. Think about it for a minute. If you own a business or manage one and you need someone with your skills, how will you find such a person? If you have 100 applicants, how will you choose the best one out of them? Your time is important but think about it, the time that a manager or owner of a business has is more precious to him so he will try to find ways to spend it well. If he has to choose a person he will allow 1 or 2 minutes (or even 10 seconds) to reed his CV. If this CV contains only some job names and some companies it's very likely that he will trow away the paper.

Anyway I'll try to put together some lines that will help you to build a good CV that will help you to go to the interview and obtain the job that you want.

Let's start with the basics - the format of the CV. I've seen so far thousands of CV formats and it seems to me that the ancient romanian wisdom define very well this problem "cate bordeiuri, atatea obiceiuri (every home has it's own rules)". Best way to handle this is to use a format that is familiar to the company that you apply for (if they have one on theyr site), if not, use the most common format that you know about. Since we are members of the EU and we need to comply to EU regulations, I believe that the best way is to use European Format for the CV. It's very likely that the person that will read your CV is familiar with the format and will know where to search for information that is relevant to them.

Next come your personal information. I know it seems really simple and easy but I've meet a bunch of CV with problems at this basic chapter so here are a few rules:

  • Use your full name (if you have more than one name) because it will help the recruiter to differentiate you from other candidates.
  • Don't use your nickname, it doesn't say that you are a professional even if you are well known in your community by it.
  • Check and double check your contact details (phone number and e-mail address). Make sure there are no mistakes or misspells.
  • It's better to use your personal mobile number not a mobile that you have from work. If you don't have a personal one, specify that this is a work number.
  • If you change your phone number, up-date your resume as soon as possible.
  • If you have a second number, indicate that one as well, or indicate you fix phone number. Some times you run out of battery or you forget to charge you mobile and you might miss an important call.
  • Use your personal e-mail address, not the one from work.
  • Your personal address should sound as normal as it can, even if you use a free mail service (it should be ionut.popescu@yahoo.com and not sweet_johhny@yahoo.com or hotlips@gmail.com). If you don't have one like this, create one and use it for this kind of purposes.
  • It's not really necessary to indicate your home address, but it's really necessary to indicate the town you live in currently not the one that you have on your ID card. It could happened that you are from Brasov and live in Bucharest for the last 3 years but you don't have the relocation on your ID card. Don't say that you are from Brasov. The recruiter will believe that you want to relocate and you could be rejected because it's easier to call at an interview someone from Bucharest rather than someone from Brasov.
  • If you are interested and open to relocation specify this at the beginning of the CV along with the cities and countries that you prefer. If not, also it is better to say so.

Your experience is the most relevant part of your CV and you must follow a few steps in order to highlight the most important informations about what you have done in the past. Let's put all the information in order:

  • The name of the company that you work for or used to work for: it should be complete especially if it's similar with other names of companies on the market. However you can loose SC and SRL. It's irrelevant and only occupies space.
  • Next you must describe in a few words what was the field of activity of the company. Especially if it's a small or less known company. Even if it's hard to believe it, Gigi SRL is not a world known company. You can also add a link to the company's site if there is any. This way the recruiter will find it easy to check the information if he needs to.
  • Your job title is tricky and this happens because of the huge difference between romanian names for jobs (and these are official) and the names that are currently used to define someone's job and that usually come from english. It's better to use the exact name of the job that you do or, if you are not really sure about it try to approximate it the best way you can. In any circumstances don't try to use a job name that you don't know nothing about it. You have no idea how many "project managers" are on the market at this moment. And they have absolutely no idea what that mens.
